Dave Fowler

Dr. Dave Fowler grew up in Casper, Wyoming and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1980. After graduation he completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a surgical residency and Master of Veterinary Science at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1987, Dr. Fowler met all requirements and was awarded diplomate status by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Dr. Fowler is well known to most veterinarians in Western Canada. He was appointed as a faculty member in the specialty of small animal surgery at WCVM in 1984, and his academic career there spanned two decades: during this time, he was involved in the didactic and clinical training of over 1000 young veterinarians that now work throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. While at WCVM, Dr. Fowler was the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honours. He also served as section head of Small Animal Surgery, as well as Head of the Department of Veterinary Anesthesiology, Radiology and Surgery. Western Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Centre was very fortunate to have Dr. Fowler join the staff in 2004.

Dr. Fowler has authored over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous text book chapters pertaining to small animal surgery. He also co-edited a practitioner oriented textbook entitled Manuscript of Canine and Feline Wound Management and Reconstruction. Dr. Fowler has served on the Examination Committee and the Nominations Committee for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and was President of the North American Wound Management Society. Dr. Fowler continues to speak by invitation at numerous national and international meetings.

Dr. Fowler will be involved in the surgical management of many of the cats and dogs seen at the Western Veterinary Cancer Centre. He offers a full spectrum of veterinary surgical services, including orthopedic, soft tissue and neurologic, and oncologic surgery. Dr. Fowler also has special interest and expertise in wound management and reconstruction, as well as in minimally invasive surgery (arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy).
